Handrails to staircases

Subject No: 8
Subject: Handrails on Staircases
Introducing Officer: D Potter (WDDC)
Date: 16/12/1998

Approved Document K1 states that handrails should be provided to a staircase on both sides if 1m wide or more.

It is the view of West Dorset Building Control that where winders are provided that handrails should be continuous around the winders.

This view is also reiterated in the new Part M (Access to Dwellings), which will be fully implemented on 25th October 1999. In fact there will now be a requirement for a suitable continuous handrail to both sides of the flight and landings where the rise of the flight comprises of three or more risers within the principal entrance storey.

POLICY STATEMENT

Building Control should endeavour to ensure that where possible a handrail is provided around the winders of a staircase.
