Subject No: 12 Question: We have been asked to consider the logic of requiring F.R.30 to the hallway ceilings in flats. (Refer cl.3.11a. and diag 7 of A.D.B. and item 14 of tableA.1. - F.r.30/30/30 required from both sides.) The reason for questioning the logic is that the protected hallway can have FR20 doors and it is claimed that a modified ˝hr or similar standard agreed as a varying of provisions would be reasonable for the ceilings on the basis that it would take at least 30 mins for fire to break through a room ceiling and then break through the hall ceiling. Answer: A varying of provisions to permit a modified half hours fire resistance to the protected hallway ceilings in Flats is deemed acceptable providing at least 12.5mm plasterboard ceiling lining is used. Loft hatches in rooms off the protected hallway should be FR30 standard. Within the hallway ceiling, the hatches may be non FR as the risk rooms will have the required fire resistance and, there will be smoke detection within the hall.
